README RS/6000 7043 Model 140 *BETA* Firmware ====================================================== NOTE!!: The firmware image in this directory is unofficial beta code for use by IBM Business Partners *ONLY*. The latest official firmware can be found at: http://www.rs6000.ibm.com/support/micro WARNING!!!: This firmware image can be used on an IBM RS/6000 7043 Model 140 **ONLY**. Do not use this firmware for ANY other RS/6000 systems! What's in this beta ------------------- This beta, version TIG97161, is a pre-release version of 7043-140 firmware containing new, unreleased function. Updating the firmware --------------------- Follow the steps below carefully. If something does not appear to work, stop and get help. Consult the system publications first. 1) Copy the firmware image, tig97161.img, to a DOS (FAT) formatted diskette. (Under AIX, use "doswrite" or equivalent). 2) Go to the open firmware "ok" prompt -- a) From a graphics display, press F8 when the icons appear during IPL. b) From an ASCII terminal, press 8 when the text "icons" appear during IPL. 3) Insert the diskette with the firmware image and soft-load it using the following commands: > setenv load-base 600000 > boot floppy:1,\tig97161.img 4) A console selection may be run at this time to allow you to choose a display. A graphics display is preferred. 5) Go to the SMS menu -- a) From a graphics display, press F1 when the icons appear during IPL. b) From an ASCII terminal, press 1 when the text "icons" appear during IPL. 6) If the firmware icons or text appear and everything looks right, you can now permanently flash the new firmware image. 7) From a graphics display, use the firmware update utility. Select Utilities from the menu, then Update and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the update procedure. 8) From an ASCII terminal, use the firmware update utility. Select "Utilities" from the main menu, then "Update system firmware" and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the procedure. After the update ---------------- * The version number that will be displayed is TIG97161 * When the system configuration changes, the console selection option will be invoked. A number will appear on each display. Press the number of the display you wish to use during IPL. * The default boot sequence is: floppy, CD-ROM, hardfile, network.
